　　“Proficiency in English is critical to success at UC Berkeley. You can demonstrate proficiency by taking one of these exams and earning the required scores:

　　Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 80 or better (Berkeley prefers 100)

　　International English Language testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.5

　　DuoLingo English Test (DET) with a minimum score of 115

　　Language exam results must be received in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions no later than January prior to the fall semester in which the student wishes to enroll. Our code is 4833. Please contact TOEFL to confirm when your test scores are mailed to campuses.

　　Other ways for international students to meet the language requirement includes:

　　3+ years of Language of Instruction (LOI) in English

　　Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition, or English Literature and Composition

　　Score 6 or 7 on the IB Standard Level examination in English (Language A only)

　　Score 5, 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level examination in English (Language A only)”

Copies of the TOEFL Bulletin are also available at U.S. educational commissions and foundations, binational centers, and private organizations such as the Institute of International Education (IIE).

　　We will only accept TOEFL tests administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and sent to us directly by the TOEFL office. We do not accept the TOEFL ITP Plus for Mainland China or Duolingo. For Fall 2022, tests taken before June 1, 2020 will not be accepted even if your score was reported to UC Berkeley. The institution code for UC Berkeley is 4833 for Graduate Programs. We do not accept MyBest Scores.

　　For purposes of admission, your most recent score must be at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT). Please contact individual academic departments for more information, as they may choose to require a higher score.

　　The IBT emphasizes integrated skills so its format and scoring are different from the PBT version of the TOEFL. Please plan to take the TOEFL as soon as possible, regardless of the test’s format, to avoid delays in the review of your application.

　　International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

　　You can also submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

　　All IELTS scores must be sent electronically from the testing center, no institution code is required. Our address for identification purposes is: University of California, Berkeley, Graduate Division, Sproul Hall Rm 318, MC 5900, Berkeley, CA 94720. Please do not mail any score reports to us.

　　For Fall 2022, tests taken before June 1, 2020 will not be accepted. Your most recent overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.

　　To register for the IELTS, consult the IELTS website to locate the office of the test center where you plan to take the test.

　　Oral English Proficiency Requirement for Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Appointments

　　Once admitted, graduate students who do not speak English as a native language must satisfy the oral English proficiency requirement before they can be appointed to teach. Please note that the oral English proficiency level required for GSI positions is higher than for admissions. Consult the Language Proficiency Program for information regarding this requirement.”

No department code is needed unless specified by the specific program. ETS will not report test scores older than 5 years.

　　Domestic candidates from families with extremely low incomes may qualify for a waiver of GRE test fees. Consult your undergraduate financial aid office to determine whether your institution participates in the GRE Fee Waiver Program and whether you qualify. Fee waivers are not available directly from the Educational Testing Service or from the Graduate Division.”
